Day 2 At leisure in Beijing
Our hotel for two nights is the 5-star Regent Hotel, Beijing. You are free to explore this interesting city. One of the six ancient cities of China, modern Beijing is a melting pot of old and new, eastern and western culture. Perhaps visit the remarkable Forbidden City, the world's largest imperial palace complex, were, you can admire some of the 9,999 beautifully preserved buildings within the city walls, the exquisite gardens, rivers and richly-carved bridges. You can also visit the city's most famous landmark, Tiananmen Square. |

The Great Wall |

Day 3 of China
After a morning at leisure this morning, our sightseeing tour visit the magnificent Great Wall, constructed from the 7th century BC to keep out warrior tribes from the north. We have lunch at the Jade Factory restaurant, near the Great Wall, then continue our sighseeing tour. We meet for dinner together at the Beijing Duck restaurant, near Tiananmen Square. |

Temple of Heaven |

Day 4 The Shangri-La Express
This morning we visit the Temple of Heaven to watch dancing, musical performances and calligraphy demonstrations. We then transfer to Beijing's main railway station to join the Shangri-La Express for our adventurous eight-day tour by rail and boat, zigzagging across the Chinese countryside to Hong Kong. |

Day 5 Xi'an and the Terracotta Warriors
At lunchtime we arrive in the ancient city of Xi'an, the former imperial capital of China. Here we visit the incredible Terracotta Army - life-size models of over 8,000 soldiers and horses - originally buried with the first Emperor of Qin in 210BC and one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century. We re-join the train, enjoy dinner on-board and continue our journey to Chengdu. |

Day 6 Chengdu
After lunch the train arrives in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. The Province is home to the Giant Panda and during our tour of the city we visit the fascinating Giant Panda Breeding Research Institute, where pandas and other species of rare animals are bred throughout the year. |

Day 7 Cruise to Fengdu Ghost City
We arrive early into Chongqing where we leave the train and board one of the finest ships in the Victoria Cruises fleet for our three-night cruise along the Yangtze, China's longest river, through the Three Gorges. Today we visit Fengdu Ghost City, with its 75 temples from the Tang Dynasty; many decorated with demons and dedicated to the gods of the underworld. |

Day 8 Three Gorges cruise
We spend the day on-board, admiring the spectacular natural scenery along both sides of the Yangtze River in the area of the Three Gorges. First we enter the narrow Qutang Gorge, the shortest but most dramatic and precipitous of the gorges, and then the deep, 44km long Wu Xia Gorge. After a visit to the crystal-clear waters of the Shennong Stream we continue along the western stretch of the Xinling Gorge, with its rapids and rocky outcrops. |

Day 9 Yichang and the Three Gorges Dam
Today we cruise along the eastern stretch of the scenic Xinling Gorge and visit the Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydro-electric project in the world, expected to be completed in 2009. We arrive in the city of Yichang, known as the Gateway to the Three Gorges, at lunchtime and enjoy a tour of this important trading port. |

Day 10 Relaxing on board
We re-join the Shangri-La Express and continue our journey south. Our day is spent relaxing on-board China's most comfortable train, in the cosy environment of our cabins or perhaps socialising in the 'bar car' enjoying the changing scenery as we travel through Southern China towards Guilin. |

Day 11 Guilin
We arrive in Guilin, a beautiful city situated on the scenic Li River, renowned for its unusual skyline of towering limestone hills. We enjoy a cruise on the river amongst the strange karst rock formations and visit the 600,000-year old Reed Flute Cave, on the outskirts of the city, to see the amazing stalactites and stone pillars. |

Day 12 Guangzhou and Shenzhen
Guangzhou, formerly known as Canton and also called the Flower City, is our first stop today. We spend the morning touring this historic city, once the starting point of the Silk Road of the Sea, before enjoying a delicious lunch of traditional Cantonese cuisine. We re-join the train and travel to Shenzhen where we leave the Shangri-La Express and cross into Hong Kong. Our base for tonight is the 5 star Harbour Plaza Hotel, Kowloon. We enjoy dinner together in Hong Kong. |

Days 13-14 Return to London
Your last day is free to enjoy the spectacular city of Hong Kong. Perhaps take a ride on the ancient trams which weave through the city and visit the Sheung Wan and Western districts, typically Chinese and filled with traditional chop-houses and exotic markets. Alternatively, why not visit Aberdeen Harbour, home to hundreds of people living on traditional fishing junks? This evening we transfer to the airport and depart on the overnight flight to London Heathrow, arriving early on Day 14. |
